Understanding our responses to change – a fun and quick team activity
This is a fun, quick and interesting activity for teams interested in how we respond to change.
How to Run the 'Back to Back' Activity
Step 1: Pair & Observe - Have team members form pairs and observe each other's appearance. Then, stand back-to-back, not touching.
Step 2: Make Changes - Instruct everyone to alter their appearance in five ways. Watch for hesitation or quick action and different comfort levels across the team.. What changes are being made?
Step 3: More Changes After the initial round - ask for five more changes. Note people's comfort levels and creativity.
Step 4: Reveal & Discuss Turn to face each other. Discuss the experience.
Debrief: Key Takeaways
-Initial Feelings: The activity sheds light on comfort with change. How agile or resistant are different people in your team?
-First Reactions: Many start by removing items, focusing on loss. Does this reflect your team's approach?
-Evolving Tactics: As it goes on, some people begin adding items, showing a more flexible approach to change.
-Working as a Team: How do they support each other? How can this energy be leveraged during transitions?
-Comfort vs. Stretch: After the activity, some want to revert back. What happens if we push boundaries instead?
In my next post, we'll explore the 'Change Curve' to delve deeper into navigating change. If your team is navigating change and you'd like to discuss how to support them further do get in touch.
